Although commercial rabbit food contains much of the same nutrients as rabbit hay, hay is the only good source of long strand fiber, which is absolutely necessary to prevent sever digestive problems for your rabbit. Several varieties of rabbit hay are available, with varying nutritional properties.
Your first, best bet for rabbit hay is Timothy hay. This high fiber, low protein rabbit hay is perfect for mature rabbits, and can be fed freely without risk of over consumption. Because it is low in protein, it will not cause obesity, and the low calcium content prevents urinary tract problems. However, if you are raising young, growing rabbits, or have a pregnant female, they will need greater protein content than this rabbit hay offers.
Alfalfa is also a common rabbit hay, and with a greater protein content, is more suited to immature, pregnant, or nursing rabbits. It can also be fed in limited quantities to mature rabbits, who will enjoy the richness of this rabbit hay.
